Accelerometry-based physical activity metrics and their association with non-communicable diseases in Luxembourg

Aim

Our first aim was to determine the prevalence of physical activity (i.e. the proportion of the population that meets the international recommendations for physical activity) in adults residents from Luxembourg using objective measures of physical activity collected with 3D accelerometers. Our secondary aim was to investigate the association between the multiple dimensions of physical activity and cardiometabolic risk factors as well as some non-communicable diseases (e.g. diabetes) in adults residents from Luxembourg.

Background

The second wave of the “Observation of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Luxembourg” (ORISCAV-LUX) survey is a cross-sectional nationwide population-based study focused on cardiometabolic health in adults (aged 25-79 years) from the general population residing in Luxembourg. A total of 1558 subjects were enrolled between 2016 and 2018.

Participation to the study included 3 main steps:

1) filling in a self-reported questionnaire,

2) clinical and anthropometric measurements according to standardised operating procedures,

3) blood, urine and hair samples collection. During the clinical examination, several biomarkers such as blood pressure, pulse rate, electrocardiogram, and arterial stiffness were assessed.

Finally, objective measure of physical activity (i.e. accelerometry) was collected over 7 days (24h) on about 1200 of the participants.

For this project, data from the ORISCAV-LUX study is employed. ORISCAV-LUX is a nationwide large scale population-based survey to monitor cardio-metabolic-cognitive and physical health of the resident population in Luxembourg.
