Ron Gainsford

Ron led the Chartered Trading Standards Institute in the UK as its Chief Executive from February 2002 until March 2013, after having spent a decade at the heart of local government’s national and international coordinating machinery. 

His professional background is in trading standards, local and central government with broad experience in working in a variety of local authorities and in UK, EU and international regulation of trading standards and associated consumer protection issues. He is well versed in European and international collaboration and has represented UK interests on several European enforcement and influencing groups involving consumer protection counterparts and other professionals from member states, EU institutions and other overseas agencies. He has been an adviser to a number of overseas governments on public protection and market surveillance issues. 

Ron was made a Fellow of the Institute in 1999 for his services to trading standards and awarded the OBE in 2010 for services to consumers and to business. He was awarded life membership and made a Vice President of the Institute in 2012. He holds a number of appointments in a non-executive capacity with a range of consumer and business organisations in the UK and Europe. Ron sustains his Parliamentary relationships in support of the Institute and profession.
